CALOOCAN CITY, Sept. 26 (PIA) -Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte appealed to pork meat traders and retailers to avoid overpricing amid the surge in pork price due to shortage as a result of African swine fever (ASF) in Luzon.

Based on the daily market report of the Quezon City Veterinary Department (QCVD), various meat retailers have been selling their pork products up to 300 pesos per kilo, far from the suggested retail price of 260 to 270 pesos per kilo.

"Huwag po tayong mag-overprice sa presyo ng karneng baboy. Nabili niyo po 'yan sa inyong supplier sa tamang presyo, kaya ibenta niyo rin sa tamang halaga," Belmonte said.

The mayor also assured residents that the city is closely monitoring all local markets to protect consumers from erring businesses.

"Araw-araw pong may nagmo-monitor sa ating mga pamilihan upang masigurong walang overpricing, hindi lang sa karneng baboy kundi sa iba pang bilihin," Belmonte assured.

According to City Veterinarian Dr. Ana Marie Cabel, the increase of pork prices is due to the shortage of live weight or fresh hog supply in Luzon and the restrictions of shipment of live animals from Visayas and Mindanao.

"It is harder to get supply from Visayas and Mindanao because of restrictions in the shipment of live animals due to the pandemic," she explained.

Cabel also assured that the city remains free from ASF as most of the piggeries were already depopulated.

Aside from the veterinary department, the city's Market Development and Administration Department (MDAD) is also closely monitoring our markets.

Imported and frozen meat products are also being inspected in our markets and groceries.

"Tuloy-tuloy naman ang inspeksyon natin sa wet markets, grocery at supermarket para masigurong safe at walang ASF ang bibilhin ng ating mga resident," Cabel said.

Cabel reminded local residents to look for meat inspection certificates to ensure that meat being sold underwent thorough examination by meat inspectors.

The local government is also inspecting imported and frozen meat being sold in markets and groceries to ensure they are safe for human consumption. (QC PAISD/PIA-NCR)
